A note from your hosts
The castle is the reason you come, and it deserves more than just a photo from the front. Every tour is fully private, so you spend the day with your own people, in plain English. Your tickets are bought before you arrive, so you skip the queue and walk straight in.
Afterwards, a short ride across town to Nadagiku, a historic sake brewery that has operated in Himeji since 1910, for a walk through the kura and a tasting to finish.

The tour
One castle and one brewery, both done properly. No bus, no megaphone, no racing past the good parts.
We meet at the station, and the exact spot comes with your booking confirmation. If you have luggage to store or anything to take care of before we set off, we'll be there to help. Step out on the north side and the castle is already there, floating at the end of the boulevard.
A fifteen-minute walk toward the gates, with the town's story told along the way. If the weather is poor we may walk up Miyuki-dōri instead, the covered arcade a block to the east, where you'll see a mix of shopfronts both old and new.
Your admission is bought before you arrive, so we go straight past the ticket line. Then the path turns, narrows, climbs and doubles back on purpose. Nothing about the way in is an accident, and your guide will show you why as you walk it.
Shoes come off at the door (bags provided), and the building changes the moment you step in: bare timber underfoot, low light, and steep wooden stairs to the top. The view from the top is worth the climb.
We come down through the grounds and pick up a taxi beside the castle, and the fare is part of your ticket. It's a short ride, and the city changes character on the way, out of the castle's orbit and into a working part of town where the brewery has stood for over a century.
Nadagiku has been making sake in Himeji since 1910. We walk through the working brewery, and then there's the tasting, which is included and the part most people remember. Anyone under twenty, and anyone not drinking, is served amazake instead, the sweet alcohol-free rice drink the same brewery makes.
The tour ends here at the brewery, not back where we started. That's deliberate: you're free from this point, with the rest of the day still ahead of you, and plenty of people would rather carry on than be marched back to the station.
Getting back is yours to arrange, and it's easy. Tegara Station is a few minutes' walk and one stop from Himeji, or a taxi will take you door to door. If you'd rather not work it out alone, walk to Tegara with us. We're heading that way anyway, and you just cover your own fare. Either way you'll get our honest list before we say goodbye: where to eat first, then what's worth the rest of your day.

Who you're walking with
Himeji Tour is run by locals who walk these grounds in every season. Every tour is private: one group a day, and it is your own group, never strangers put together. When everyone already knows each other, the day can follow what the group actually wants rather than splitting the difference between ten people who have just met. Ask whatever you like, about the castle, about the sake, or just where to eat afterwards. That's the point of walking with locals.

Yes. This is a full visit, not a walk-past. Admission to the castle and main keep is purchased before you arrive; there's nothing to queue for and nothing to pay at the gate.
The approach is flat and unhurried. Inside the keep are six flights of steep wooden stairs, closer to ship's ladders than staircases, taken slowly and with handrails. The grounds suit most fitness levels, but the keep interior is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.
Everyone enters the keep in socks, carrying their shoes in a bag provided at the entrance. It is how these floors have always been kept. Slip-ons make it easier.
It's included in the price. After the walk through the brewery there's a guided tasting, with your guide on hand to talk you through it. If you'd like to buy a bottle to take home afterwards, your guide is happy to help you pick.

Please do. Kids tend to love this castle, with a lot to climb and a lot to look at. Strollers wait at the keep entrance, so bring a carrier for little ones. At the brewery, the drinking age in Japan is 20, so anyone younger is served amazake instead of sake.

The tour ends at the brewery, not back at Himeji Station, and the journey on from there is your own to arrange. It's straightforward: Tegara Station is a few minutes' walk and one stop from Himeji, or a taxi will take you wherever you're going next.
We say this plainly because plenty of guests don't want to return to the station at all. They'd rather eat nearby or carry on with their day. If you do want to head back and would rather not navigate alone, walk to Tegara with us when we finish; you just cover your own fare.
We walk rain or shine, and a misty castle is one of its best moods. On a wet day we take Miyuki-dōri, the covered arcade running alongside Ōtemae-dōri, so most of the walk up from the station is under a roof. In severe weather, cancellations and refunds follow the policy of the platform you booked on.

Himeji Station has coin lockers in every size, so the tour works well as a stopover between Ōsaka/Kyōto and Hiroshima. Drop your bags, see the castle properly, and be on the shinkansen by evening.
